Winemaker’s Notes

Very dark crimson in the glass. The aromatics welcome you with layers of plum, blackberry, black cherry, black olive, and dark chocolate. On the palate, sweet black and blue fruits unfold across a refined frame of polished tannin and fresh acidity. The finish is long, mouthwatering, and perfectly balanced-an inviting and expressive blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Vintage Notes

When we put the last of the 2023's to barrel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of deep gratitude for a truly wonderful growing season. We entered the season with a winter that would not loosen its grip, but then the weather seemed to skip our normal spring entirely and move straight into summer in late April. We had nearly simultaneous bud break in all varietals at Figgins Estate Vineyard, which is quite unusual. Despite one two-day heat wave, the summer was one of the most pleasant I can ever remember. Harvest was drama- free, generous, and proceeded at a steady pace. The 2023 vintage has stunning potential, with amazing color, density of fruit, and supple tannins. I can't wait to see the evolution!

Critical Acclaim

97- Owen Bargreen

A world-class follow-up to the gorgeous ’22, the 2023 ‘Figlia’ combines equal parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. I’ve now said for years that the Petit Verdot sourced from the Figgins Estate is the best you will find in Washington State. This really needs about an hour in the decanter before enjoying, as it comes off slightly more fleshy and round than the ’22 edition. Once aroused, this shows off tar, sweet pipe tobacco, and green bell pepper aromatics that combine with pencil lead and chocolate fudge. The palate is impeccably textured, with serious freshness and concentration. Powerful black and blue fruits parade with espresso bean and graphite notes on the palate. With great length and poise, this beauty will easily be a 20-year wine. Drink 2026-2046

96- International Wine Report

Power and density define the 2023 Figgins Family Figlia Red Wine from the Walla Walla Valley, a blend of Petit Verdot and Malbec that leans into its formidable structure without sacrificing detail. The wine shows an opaque purple core with a faintly violet edge, immediately conveying its concentration. Aromatics are deeply pitched, revealing dried violet, cacao powder, black plum, and loamy earth with a subtle woodsy undertone. On the palate, it turns expansive and layered, offering blackberry compote, dark chocolate ganache, cedar-tinged herbs, and a touch of vanilla pod. Full-bodied with elevated acidity, it carries a firm lattice of tannin that grips without coarseness, anchoring the wine’s richness with precision. Despite its scale, there is balance here, with freshness lifting the darker fruit profile and keeping the wine composed. A grilled ribeye with charred fat and rosemary would meet this wine at its level, the protein softening the tannin while echoing its savory depth. Editor’s choice.
